Building the Kiln
Building an experimental wood fired kiln based on the Bourrey box burt with major alterations for ash effect
Firing the Kiln
First firing of "BakanaGama" (Japanese for the Idiot's kiln) was a SUCCESS!! It didn't fall in one itself and we got some good results
The Process
Throwing clay as hard as we can! We throw on the wheel, but also take slabs of clay, throw them forcefully against natural and man made materials to get organic patterns impressed onto the clay. These are hand formed into sculptures, lamp bases for mixed media lamps, and functional ware, including tea ceremony utensils.
Recent works:
Works out of the latest wood firing. Functional ware is treated with kitchen safe glazes, for sculpture and lamps, we aim for heavy wood ash glaze effects.
